Lily is a young, single mum with two small children. She has recently moved from her mother’s home to live with her partner. Lily’s mother has diabetes. Lily worries about her mother, who has diabetes, getting older because she is now on her own. Lily would like her mum to meet new people and not rely on her so much.
Whilst in the local library one day, Lily picked up a newsletter about her local LINk and thought her mother might be interested in getting involved with the LINk, meeting people and being able to influence the health services that she relies upon.
Lilly was really pleased to hear that her mother had sent off the membership form to get more information on the LINk and it's activities.
Lily’s mum became a member and she has made new friends. One friend in particular, who Lily has got to know as well, also has diabetes and they support each other, which reassures Lily that she doesn’t need to worry as much about her mother being on her own.
Lily and her mum have learnt how health and social care services are provided, and how changes can make a difference to patients. The diabetes services are changing and they are both worried about how this will affect Lily's mum in the future. Her mum suggested that Lily becomes a member too, saying “It’s your time, don’t worry about things, join and help mum make a difference".
